A judge yesterday told a would-be divorcee to 'take a rest' in jail after giving him a 16-month sentence for attacking his wife with a paper cutter.

Lui Yiu, 65, could have been jailed for four years on the charge of wounding Sae Lee Mee-yong, 54, the Court of First Instance heard.

Deputy Judge Li Zong-er reduced the starting point by two-thirds to account for Lui's guilty plea and previous clean record.

'You were understandably in a bad mood at that moment. What you've committed can be called a crime of passion,' the judge said.

Lui, who worked as a decorator and a cleaner, stabbed the back of his wife's head on January 24 as she was preparing breakfast for the family in their Central home.

The attack, which almost severed the woman's right hand as she attempted to defend herself, came a day before their divorce proceedings, the court heard.
