MORE than 600 policemen were mobilised to hunt down five gangsters who went on a killing spree in Hunan this week.

 The massive manhunt began on Tuesday, the semi-official Hong Kong China News Agency reported.

 It said the gang of five first robbed three teachers of 74,000 yuan (HK$70,000) in Xinshao County.

 The gang - armed with submachineguns - then stormed into a nearby village.

 Led by a man identified as Li Qinghai, the gang killed a family of 10 and seriously injured three other people.

 The report said the family had some personal grudges with Li.

 It said the authorities had to mobilise 600 policemen from as many as five cities to set up roadblocks along highways and the railway line to track down the gang.

 A police officer was shot when four of the five gangsters who were trying to flee in a taxi were first intercepted in Zhuzhou, a city north of the provincial capital Changsha.

 The four managed to escape and split into two groups.

 Two were arrested on Wednesday in the small town of Qingshi when a taxi driver became suspicious and turned them in.

 Police arrested two other members, including Li, in Loudi, a city west of Changsha.

 The report said police were still looking for the last member of the gang.
