They are young, male and rich, and more than half have Wall Street's love affair with Internet stocks to thank for their wealth.

 Of the 40 richest Americans 40 or younger, 37 are founders or executives with information technology (IT) or Internet businesses, according to Fortune magazine.

 Twenty-one were involved in Internet businesses and the others in areas such as personal computer manufacture, computer software, IT consulting, and venture capital.

 The richest is Michael Dell, founder and chief executive of Dell Computer, with estimated net worth of US$21.49 billion.

 Ted Waitt, founder and chief executive of Dell's rival, Gateway Computer, was worth $5.44 billion, third on the list.

 Jeffrey Bezos, head of Net retailing giant Amazon.com, was worth $5.74 billion, or enough to 'wipe out the external debt of Honduras', according to Fortune.

 Rounding out the top 10 are eBay founder Pierre Omidyar, Yahoo! co-founders David Filo and Jerry Yang, Broadcom chief executive Henry Nicholas, Buy.com founder Scott Blum, RealNetworks chief executive Rob Glaser and eBay executive Jeff Skoll.

 Some will see the list as proof of the wealth-creation possibilities of the Net. Others say this wealth is theoretical, being based on volatile, overvalued, stock prices.

 The youngest person on the list is Paul Gauthier, 26, of the Internet search engine Inktomi, who is worth $418 million.
