Net fortune takes off for under-40s
They are young, male and rich, and more than half have Wall Street's love affair with Internet stocks to thank for their wealth.
Of the 40 richest Americans 40 or younger, 37 are founders or executives with information technology (IT) or Internet businesses, according to Fortune magazine.
Twenty-one were involved in Internet businesses and the others in areas such as personal computer manufacture, computer software, IT consulting, and venture capital.
The richest is Michael Dell, founder and chief executive of Dell Computer, with estimated net worth of US$21.49 billion.
Ted Waitt, founder and chief executive of Dell's rival, Gateway Computer, was worth $5.44 billion, third on the list.
Jeffrey Bezos, head of Net retailing giant Amazon.com, was worth $5.74 billion, or enough to 'wipe out the external debt of Honduras', according to Fortune.
