A model who sometimes spends $100,000 a month on clothing, denied shoplifting, claiming she had been distracted by a phone conversation with her boyfriend, a court heard yesterday.

Cara Roberta Chan, 23, is accused of stealing eight items of underwear from Marks & Spencer at Times Square on June 1. The garments were worth $714.

Department store security guard Chan Wai-ling told Magistrate Andrew Chan Hing-wai that she paid close attention to Chan as she looked suspicious.

'She was looking here and there, appearing to be quite suspicious. I saw her take a piece of underwear from the rack, roll it into a ball and slip it into her bag. She did it several times,' the guard said.

Eastern Court heard Chan paid for only one garment and was stopped by the guard outside the shop.

Her defence barrister, Edward Laskey, said Chan had been distracted by a phone call from her boyfriend Jimmy Wong, also a model, who told Chan he was leaving for the United States.
