Last Thursday evening, I was having dinner in a restaurant in Causeway Bay. It was around 7.30pm and I had a clear view of the street.
During the next hour, I witnessed hundreds of buses passing by. More than 80 per cent of the buses had fewer than 20 passengers in them, and I was lucky to see a bus half-full.
Something is seriously wrong. Why do the bus companies send out these empty buses on the road? I wonder if it has got something to do with the fare-setting system.
Why does the Transport Department allow this? What has the Environmental Protection Department done? The fastest way for Hong Kong to solve its worsening pollution problem is to review its public transport system, in particular oversupply and scheduling of buses.
If nobody rides in them during certain times of the day, then let's not allow them on the roads and emit harmful fumes.
The problem is obvious and so is the solution.
