Minutes after the No 8 typhoon signal was lowered to No 3 on Thursday night, David Campbell, 50, and his wife, May, went to visit a friend on a pleasure boat berthed at the marina club at 10.30pm.

A police spokesman said the couple left the boat before 11.30pm and took different routes back to their home in Discovery Bay.

Mrs Campbell returned to the Marina Club after her husband failed to show up at home and then sought help from the manager.

Campbell was found floating near one of the docks at about 11.30pm.
