THE headquarters building of HSBC in Central was yesterday named Hong Kong's finest piece of architecture - narrowly pipping Chek Lap Kok airport's passenger terminal for the title.
The bank building topped a ballot to select the SAR's 10 best architectural works, collecting 3,676 votes in the poll organised by RTHK, Hong Kong Institute of Architects and Hong Kong Economic Times.
The poll win is another personal triumph for British architect Sir Norman Foster, who was presented this year with the profession's top honour, the Pritzker Prize.
The airport passenger terminal, also designed by Sir Norman, came second in a close contest with third placed Bank of China Building. They collected 3,565 and 3,405 votes respectively.
They were followed by the extension of the Convention and Exhibition Centre, Wan Chai; Chin Lin Monastery, Diamond Hill; the Legislative Council Building, Central; and the Clock Tower, Tsim Sha Tsui.
Government House, the Peak Tower and the Peninsula Hotel rounded off the list.
