If you treat television as part of your family, your personal stereo as a pet, comics as companions, movies as lovers and spend most of your time with them, you qualify as a media consumer. As a media consumer, you should know what the three Ms and three Es are.

Money The word money is prominent in the media, as well as in society.

Money dominates the information we watch and read every day. As most media companies in Hong Kong are privately owned, they are commercial in nature and their most important objective is to make money.

Why do television stations work so hard to produce drama series and game shows for people to watch without charging them? And why are many sponsors willing to pay more than $70,000 for a 30-second commercial screened in prime time? It is because they believe television commercials can persuade the audience to buy their products. They also know when the target audience watches television. For example, commercials for domestic products are aired in the afternoon when most housewives are doing housework or watching afternoon soap operas.

Medium Communication in the media is different in each medium. Radio occupies mainly the audio senses of the au dience, while televis ion delivers both au dio and visual mes sages.

Newspaper and magazines appear in a two-dimensional form while in film and television, we per ceive three-dimen sional images.

On the Internet communication is in an interactive format. As technology advances, forms of communication will vary.
