I refer to recent press reports on heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the friends and family of the recent victims.

Although news reports listed the signs of heatstroke, nothing was mentioned about prevention. The first defence against heat-related illness is proper hydration. Hiking or any other physical activity done outside which causes heavy perspiration requires mineral replacement. Drinking distilled water does not replace vital minerals like sodium, potassium, chloride and magnesium. Lacking these minerals causes an electrolyte imbalance, which affects both our muscular and nervous systems. This imbalance leads to vital organs shutting down which causes heat exhaustion, and or heatstroke.

To maintain proper hydration people should drink mineral water, or isotonic drinks, during periods of increased physical activities when vital minerals are lost.
