People who flew into Chek Lap Kok airport from Taiwan yesterday spoke of the terror they felt when the quake struck.
Wong Lui, 29, a Hong Kong woman who lives with her Taiwanese husband in Taipei, said: 'We were sleeping and the quake shook us awake. I saw furniture falling down all over the place.
'It lasted for quite a long time and we experienced many aftershocks in the next two hours.
'A 22-storey building near our house collapsed. Objects were falling, so we didn't dare go out.
'The electricity and water supply were cut. We just sat in darkness, terrified and listening to the radio for news.' Ms Wong said Taipei airport was crowded and chaotic.
'The computer systems were down, so the situation was quite confusing, but fortunately there was no delay or cancellation of flights,' she said.
Experiencing an earthquake for the first time, she felt fortunate not to have been injured.
