I have become used to the pushing and shoving on the KCR.
Simply to get on and off is an exercise in survival. Recently I witnessed a disturbing example of the 'me first' philosophy of many Hong Kong people.
A seriously disabled young women, who could only stand with the aid of two special walking sticks, was left standing on the KCR while children, teenagers and able-bodied adults ignored her plight.
She was visibly distressed and it was not until a very old, woman half way down the carriage spotted her was she given a seat.
Why did it take a very old woman, who also had difficulty standing, to provide a seat for this young disabled woman? The saddest aspect of this sorry incident is the fact that the two were so 'invisible' to the other passengers that no one was shamed into giving up their seat.
In fact, no one even appeared to notice the incident. Shame on the families who produce such self-obsessed young people.
