Six energetic musicians are taking to the air waves to promote chamber music in Hong Kong.

  This month, RTHK 4 aired its first chamber group in residence programme, featuring Les Six.

  Radio 4 head Richard Tsang Yip-fat said chamber music was diversified and interesting, but it was not well known in Hong Kong.

  'Many compositions are suitable for chamber arrangements but in the past the lack of places to perform in and economic factors were obstacles to its development,' Tsang said.

  To remedy this problem, Radio 4 decided to provide a secure environment for one group to promote chamber music to a wider audience.

  'It is a great prospect to promote chamber music to young people,' he said.

  The name Les Six means 'the six' in French and the group uses 'six scholars' as the Chinese translation.

 Les Six comprise pianist Nancy Loo, flutist Izaskun Erdocia, bassoon player Chin Hing-sang, French horn player Lee Siu-lam, oboist Yiu Song- lam and clarinetist Choy Kwok- tin.

  'Although they are unaware of it, many young people have played chamber music on their instruments already,' Choy said.

  The group will perform six live concerts at RTHK's Studio 1 over the coming year to promote an appreciation of chamber music.

  In addition to their radio per formances, Les Six plan to pro mote their chamber music at schools and universities.

'I believe chamber music will be as popular as pop music among teenagers in coming years,' French horn player Lee said.

  For their concert in June, all the music will be works composed by young local composers.

  'It is an great opportunity to encourage the younger generation to participate in our series.' Choy said.
