Bad weather which ruined the start of the League last Sunday brought about an early implementation of the new rules for the 1999-2000 season - one of which has teams sharing points in case of a no-result.

Without playing a shot, eight of the nine teams in the Sunday League have gained 15 points each. The ninth team, KCC Templars, who had a bye on the opening week, were left with none.

'It is the luck of the draw I guess. Templars won't get any points,' said Mark Burns, Hong Kong Cricket Association (HKCA) operations manager.

In past seasons, an abandoned game would have been re-scheduled. But a lack of grounds and the fact that re-scheduling could prolong the season has brought about the rule change.

Apart from the no-result ruling, a number of other new rules have been brought in to 'add spice to the League', according to the chief architect, Hong Kong captain Stewart Brew.

Among them are: (a) points for an outright win will be reduced from 20 to 10. But bonus points for batting and bowling can see a winning side gain a maximum 20 points; (b) teams will be penalised for a slow over-rate; (c) the adoption of the World Cup rule for extras like no-balls and wides with runs being scored off them being added. Thus a four hit off a no-ball will add up to five runs.
