Lawmakers attacked doctors yesterday for rejecting calls to give patients prescriptions and disclose the price of medicine being dispensed.

Dr Lo Wing-lok, vice-president of the Hong Kong Medical Association, had said patients could request the details from doctors if required.

'Seeing doctors is a two-way and interactive process. Patients have to ask if they want [prescriptions and medicine prices],' he said.

His comments were criticised by lawmakers who said doctors had turned a deaf ear to patients.

Selina Chow Liang Shuk-yee, vice-chairman of the Liberal Party, said doctors had not given patients the right to choose.

'Will doctors give patients prescriptions? Are patients informed of the price for diagnoses and medicine separately so that they can choose where to buy medicine?' she asked at a Legislative Council health services panel meeting.
