I feel very uncomfortable seeing people, mostly young people, working in enclosed areas without any natural ventilation or even air-conditioning, when they are surrounded by toxic emissions from moving vehicles. I am referring to the car cleaning and polishing services that one finds in many multi-storey carparks, many of which are in basements where there is little or no ventilation. I really believe that working eight hours a day in such an environment is hazardous to a person's health. Are there any laws or regulations in place governing the operation of these services? It would make more sense to restrict these services to premises where natural ventilation was available. Are government officials indifferent to this problem? I would appreciate a reply, through these columns, from the Secretary for Health and Welfare or the Director of Environmental Protection. Surely, the Labour Department should also be looking into this problem. DAVID LAU Kowloon Tong
