Jiang Zemin pledged to continue pushing for the reunification of Taiwan with the mainland. 'We will continue to pursue the policy of peaceful reunification and 'one country, two systems',' he said in his Tiananmen Square address. 'We will ultimately accomplish the national reunification of Taiwan, after the handover of Hong Kong and Macau. 'The complete reunification of the motherland and the maintenance of its security are the very foundation for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and the unshakeable will of all the Chinese people.' Some Taiwan TV stations broadcast the festivities in Beijing live, including the lines of tanks, soaring fighter jets and Mr Jiang's speech. The President saluted the mainland's 56 ethnic groups, including 55 minorities, at the start of his speech. Among the parade's civilian procession were members of various minority groups, dressed in colourful traditional costumes, symbolising ethnic unity. Central authorities have admitted they face a difficult task in dealing with ethnic unrest but have pledged to increase help for minorities, including sizeable populations of Tibetans and ethnic Muslims.
