KOWLOON Cricket Club A open their Hong Kong First Division hockey campaign today uncertain whether they have the qualities to repeat their treble success of last season. KCC ended one-time kings Shaheen's reign at the top of the Hong Kong hockey ladder by winning the league, the Holland Cup and the Guru Nanak Trophy all in one memorable season. But captain and midfielder Ishtiaq Khan isn't sure whether the team can pull off another trophy haul as they take on old rivals Nav Bharat A in their season opener at Happy Valley today. Having undergone several key changes in the run-up to the new season, Khan is adamant that KCC should not expect to enjoy the same kind of success which made them the division's most dominant team of 1999. Former Dutch captain Feico Buijs has returned to the Netherlands, leaving a gap at the centre of their attack. Striker Jaime Collaco, who served the Cricketers well for several seasons, has returned to Shaheen. However, KCC have acquired several top players - ironically from arch-rivals Shaheen. Ex-Shaheen players Deric Leung and Sabir Muhammed have joined KCC in the role or left-wing and wing-half respectively. But Khan said: 'We're struggling at the moment. We're not 100 per cent fit.' KCC are also struggling with a few injuries. Wing-half John Higginson faces a fitness test before the game, while KCC have to make do without Hong Kong national skipper Farooq Saeed today as he is out of town. There are only two First Division matches today with lightweights Valley A and Elite A playing the only other match on the programme. But KCC's performance today will serve as a gauge for title contenders Football Club A, who will be hoping to better their disappointing fourth place last season. Bullets, who won the Second Division title convincingly last season, are also considered title contenders - if they keep their cool on the pitch. Bullets have one of the worst disciplinary records both on and off the pitch but if they get down to playing some serious hockey, they can finish among the top three. Pakistan Association A will also be fighting for the title after finishing a promising third last season. Unus Alladin
