Next year's Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon will have a new waterfront start and will see the return of the half-marathon category.
Organisers of the February 20 marathon hope the changes will inject more interest in the event which last year saw a record number of runners taking part.
Almost 7,000 runners competed in last year's marathon and 10-kilometre event and organisers are hopeful of breaking that mark, with the marathon course beginning at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre in Tsim Sha Tsui.
The race's past courses have included a cross-border race celebrating the handover in 1997, a run along the new airport's runway in 1998, and the marathon's first urban course through Central last year.
Next year's race will start at the Cultural Centre, run along the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront, follow the Hunghom Bypass, then wind through Yau Ma Tei to the No 3 Expressway, before traversing the Ting Kau Bridge and turning back for the finish at the Shamshuipo Sports Ground.
The event has achieved worldwide recognition, becoming a fixture on the racing calendar of many international distance-running enthusiasts.
