Chan, 20, is competing in the women's under-52 kilograms category and must fight Japan's Noriko Mizoguchi, runner-up to Spain's Almudena Munoz in Barcelona.

In the build-up to Barcelona, Chan was selected by the Hongkong Judo Association at the expense of 1990 Asian Games bronze medallist, Tina Yu Wai-seung.

But the association was over-ruled by the territory's National Olympic Committee and Yu went to Barcelona instead of Chan.

The first of the five Hongkong judo players is in action today - Wu Ching-hui in the women's under-61 kgs division. She fights North Korea's Sin Chun-sil in Pool A.
