What are your plans for next year? I have no big plans for the coming year. In my career I only want to do my best on the children's TV programme. As for my life, I want to try my best to enjoy myself by learning and relaxing. I don't like to make myself too stressed or do too much planning. How and when did you start your showbiz career? I started my showbiz career after I entered TVB's ninth actor training course in 1979. At that time, I had tried acting and loved it. Then I took part in TVB dramas and tele-plays. I gave up taking part in dramas and plays because I discovered it was not only a case of acting, it was also how you faced the working style and culture. Most of this did not suit me. So I became a children's TV host in 1982. First of all, I treated it as a job, but then I loved this career due to the sense of purpose. What was your childhood ambition? Have you always wanted to be a children's pro gramme host? No, I never wanted to be a host, especially of children's TV programmes. My childhood ambition was to be a psychologist. I loved to read a lot of psychology books when I was young, and I wanted to use my knowledge and experience to help others. Why have you stayed in this job for so long? I have been a host of children's TV programmes for 17 years. I stayed at this post for so long because I enjoy it and the company has been satisfied with my work so far. Secondly, I believe that it is better for things to remain as they are. Do you like children? I don't hate children, but that does not mean that I love them very much. I treat them as people who should be respected by others. In fact, if you get along with them, you also can learn some things from them, such as their honesty and straightforwardness. How has your job changed over the years? There are many differences between the present and the past. Firstly, the working hours are less than a few years ago. It was hard for us to work seven days a week in the past. But now we only need to go on air every Saturday and Sunday. Secondly, we are more busy during the summer vacation and school holidays now because of TVB's Kids' Festival. Besides the working hours, the content of the programmes has also changed a lot. In the past, programmes were more preachifying and more sol emn in content. But now they are more relaxed in order to attract the children. Actually, it benefits us as our guests can be more relaxed and enjoy it. What quali ties do you need? I believe that I am suited to being a children's programme host because my broad-mindedness lets me work in harmony with the children as well as the people in front of or behind the scenes. What were your favourite subjects at school? My favourite subjects at school were mathematics and history. I liked mathematics because I felt great when I had completed a calculation. Besides that, I liked history because I could learn from the past. What are your favourite sports? I like sport very much because it is good for your health. I really like water activities, therefore my favourite active sports are swimming and sailing. Calligraphy and tai chi are my favourite quiet activities. What has been your biggest achievement so far? My biggest achievement so far was my career. In fact, I am only an ordinary person but I became well known due to my career. And I'm lucky, since all the responses from the public are positive. I think it is because of the programme. Do you have any regrets? Because of my character, I have not had any regrets in my life so far. I believe that broad- mindedness and optimism are my weapons to fight the difficulties in my life. Even if I have regrets, I will take it easy. How many marks would you give to your career? What areas would you like to improve? I would give 70 marks to my career. And the areas for the lost marks are my passivity and impatience. I think I should improve this area in order to push myself. What do you usually do in your leisure time? Actually, I am very busy all the time because after my broadcasting hours I still need to take a lot of lessons. Maybe lessons are the things I usually do for leisure. Now I am taking lessons in French, calligraphy, tai chi, and so on. I also do voluntary work at Mother's Choice every week. I really enjoy taking care of babies. If there is a next life, would you still want to be a children's TV host or would you want to be something else? If I have a next life, I would be a writer rather than a TV host. I enjoy writing down my feelings and experiences instead of talking to someone. I have contributed articles to newspapers for several years. What has been your most un forgettable event? The most unforgettable event was the role of parent. Maybe because I always get along with children, their characters and thinking are very interesting to me. I believe that children's minds and characters are very much influenced by their parents. In other words, being a parent is a great task and a heavy responsibility. Do you have a formula a suc cess? 'Walk my own way' is my formula for success. I don't like to reform myself to suit others. I only try my best to be a good person and reveal my true sentiments. What is your message to Hong Kong's youths? I think our young people lack the effort to learn more things besides those from school. I hope they can seize the day to enrich their lives and enjoy learning.
