I refer to the letters from Edward Stokes, the Secretary of the Hong Kong Conservation Photography Foundation, headlined, 'Yet another example of landscape vandalism' and 'Still waiting for reply' (South China Morning Post, August 20 and October 4 respectively). I wish to provide further background on the footpath construction at Mo Tat, Lamma. The footpath at Mo Tat was proposed in March 1996. The intention was to provide a properly paved country trail in south Lamma, through some of the scenic spots that are worth visiting but are missed out by the tourists due to the lack of a proper footpath and directional signs. The footpath will start from Mo Tat and terminate at an existing paved footpath midway between Sok Kwu Wan and Tung O. A rain shelter will be constructed along the footpath and directional signs will be erected to guide tourists. The project was circulated to concerned departments and there was no adverse comment received on the visual, aesthetic and ecological impact. Notices in both English and Chinese for the construction of the footpath at Mo Tat were posted on site on January 28 and February 12 of this year. Public consultations were made and support from the Islands Provisional District Board and the Rural Committees in the Islands District was obtained. If Mr Stokes requires any additional information, he is welcome to contact my senior engineer, W. P. Fan, at 2573 4348. K. T.
