Seventy Vietnamese and mainland illegal immigrants have been arrested in a series of swoops spanning 24 hours. But despite the large number of arrests, police say the overall number of illegal immigrants caught entering the SAR is declining. Of those rounded up, 39 were Vietnamese, reflecting a slight rise in the number of Vietnamese arrested compared with last year. Anti-illegal immigration operations have resulted in 2,468 arrests for the first nine months of this year, compared with 3,501 for the same period last year. The number of Vietnamese illegal immigrants has increased slightly, with 590 picked up in the first nine months of the year, compared with 525 in the same period last year.
