The MTRC has drawn up a list of key benefits it expects will be derived from the development of the North Island Line and East Kowloon Line. These are: Supports the redevelopment and new housing programme in South East Kowloon, and serves new urban areas within the Central and Wan Chai reclamation. Provides additional capacity to the MTR network to relieve predicted congestion on the Island Line, Tsuen Wan and Eastern Harbour Crossing. Improves the ability of the MTR system to withstand disruptions through the availability of alternative routes. Enhances traffic on the Tung Chung Line by reaching Chai Wan, improving relief on the Tsuen Wan Line. Allows more effective penetration of the Tseung Kwan O Line into the central business districts of Central, Wan Chai and Causeway Bay on Hong Kong Island. Provides sufficient reserve capacity on the Island Line to allow opening an MTR extension to Kennedy Town. Allows more effective use of the southern part of KCR East Rail through the new Hung Hom interchange, which will be designed to give easy interchange between the KCR and MTR. Increases rail traffic and reduces road congestion, air pollution and noise. Contributes to the improvement of road safety with more travellers using rail rather than road transport.
