SCT celebrates 10 million boxes with hopes for greater volume
Shanghai Container Terminals (SCT) has handled its 10 millionth container offloaded from a Cosco fifth-generation vessel.
Shanghai vice-mayor Han Zheng, attending a ceremony at the Zhanghuabang Terminal, said the throughput volume of Shanghai port would break through the four-million-teu (20 ft equivalent unit) barrier this year.
SCT chairman Chen Xuyuan thanked those in the cargo and shipping industry for their contribution to the development of Shanghai port.
He said SCT had solved the problem of congestion in the port through improvement projects involving terminal conversion, equipment procurement and upgrading computer and application systems.
SCT now has an annual handling capacity of more than two million teu.
SCT is the first joint-venture container terminal in the mainland. It was jointly established by Hutchison Port Holdings and the Shanghai Port Authority.
