A hole in the Sha Tin track, revealed during a routine check yesterday, has forced the Jockey Club to shorten the distance of tomorrow's feature event.

The Wayfoong Centenary Bowl will now be run over 1,739 metres rather than the declared 1,800 metres.

The decision was taken late yesterday after hurried consultations, but there were few details available about the extent of the damage to the track and why it could not be rectified in the 48 hours available.

Information officer Leo Kwan said: 'There is a hole in the track and it was discovered earlier today.

'The course was being checked as normal when it was found.

'The management were informed of the situation and after discussions within the racing management, it was decided to shorten the distance of the 1,800-metre race on Wednesday night.' The Wayfoong Centenary Bowl is the only race over the 1,800-metre trip, so nothing else on the night's card is affected.

The damage is at the start of the 1,800-metre chute.
