The Government Property Agency has identified 14 more under-utilised government sites for redevelopment and alternative uses, covering a total area of 6.76 hectares, in the past year. Most are in the New Territories, the biggest being the 1.38ha site in Hong Lok Yuen Road, Tai Po, which was reserved for use as a police vehicle pound. Second-biggest is a 1.05ha site at Area 24 in Fanling, originally reserved for development of a wholesale market. Also listed are a 0.75ha site at Area 16 in Fo Tan previously reserved as a Highways Department depot and a 0.78ha site at Area 2B in Sha Tin which was reserved as a future health clinic and open space. The latest list continues the agency's efforts to optimise use of existing and new government sites. It raises the total of under-utilised sites identified for redevelopment or alternative uses to 82, involving about 200ha. Other sites listed include a 0.27ha lot in Siu Sai Wan, previously reserved for community hall use, a 0.45ha site in Hunghom Bay reclamation reserved for magistracy purposes, a 0.35ha marine police site in Ma Liu Shui, Sha Tin, a 0.4ha vehicle examination and police pound site at Mui Wo, Lantau Island, and a 0.16ha site in Hau Man Street, Ho Man Tin, intended for government staff quarters. Further studies of the sites are to be conducted and it is expected to be some time before the schedule for their release is finalised. However, the agency identified eight sites to be released for redevelopment in the five-year programme to 2003-2004. These include a 0.52ha site in Justice Drive, Admiralty, a 0.28ha site in Farm Road, Ma Tau Wai, a 0.09ha site in 373 Queen's Road East and the 0.24ha Cheung Sha Wan secondary school site. The other three are the 0.2ha site of the Civil Aid Services Training Centre in Hok Yuen Street, Hunghom, the 0.4ha Caine House site in Harcourt Road, Admiralty, and the 0.17ha Fanling magistracy site. The agency is making reprovisioning arrangements for two government office sites with a view to selling them in 2001. They are the 0.9ha government office site in Canton Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, and the 1.2ha site in Tung Lo Wan Hill Road, Sha Tin. It said it also identified 20 under-used community hall sites for release.
