Cameras have been installed at Cape Collinson Crematorium to stop coffin-robbing.
Director of Urban Services Rita Lau Ng Wai-lan said strict guidelines were already in place to regulate workers' behaviour.
'We have eights sets of cameras installed in different locations to tape the process of cremation 24 hours a day, and officers are assigned to routine checks on the crematorium,' she said.
Speaking at the Urban Council's standing committee meeting yesterday, she stressed workers were not allowed to open coffins. Precious materials that do not melt during cremation, such as platinum and diamonds, must be returned to relatives.
The Independent Commission Against Corruption is investigating complaints of possible bribery after it was alleged some undertakers prised open coffins and looted valuables before sending them to the incinerator.
Mrs Lau said the department first received a complaint from a worker in October 1996, and referred the case to police.
