Celebrating its 15th anniversary this year, City University of Hong Kong (CityU) has grown rapidly since it was founded in Mongkok in 1984.
Now located in Tat Chee Avenue, Kowloon Tong, CityU was originally established as the then City Polytechnic of Hong Kong. It was granted university status in 1994.
Since its early days, student enrolment has risen from 1,067 to 17,451 and the number of programmes taught has expanded from nine to more than 90. In 1998, 8,437 students were enrolled in 48 bachelor's degree programmes. It has a total of 2,730 staff, of whom 847 are academic.
In September 1997, the uni versity introduced its credits system which allows students to benefit from the broad range of subjects on offer. As of this academic year, the entire curriculum has been converted to the credits system.
CityU has 12 research centres established at university and faculty levels.
The university offers 26 sub- degree, 49 undergraduate and 46 postgraduate programmes from three faculties - business; humanities and social sciences; science and engineering - and the School of Creative Media, the School of Law and the College of Higher Vocational Studies.
