Intensive training paid off for Diocesan Boys' School (DBS) as they romped home in the inter-school medley relay in the final round of the Watson's Athletic King Championships '99. As well as SAR students, top athletes from the mainland, such as national champion Jin Long, who won the silver medal in the women's high jump at the Asian Games, and Xu Bin, national champion in men's long jump, were invited to compete with local athletes. SAR athletes such as Chiang Wai-hung, To Wai-lok, Tang Hon-sing, Wan Kin-yee and Fung Ching-cheong were also invited to vie for the Athletic King and Athletic Queen titles. The inter-school medley relay was held to promote students' interest in sport. DBS' relay team comprised Li Ka-fai, So Hoi- man, Chor Pak-hou, Lau Ting- pong and Cheng Chun-yung. Their training paid off as they defeated Chong Gene Hang College in the final by clocking one minute 39.54 seconds. 'We have the confidence to win the competition because we're hardworking and very committed to athletics,' Hoi- man said before the final. La Salle College, Chong Gene Hang College and King George V School (KGV) were strong in the men's relay and might pose a threat to their success, he said. 'To win the competition, we have our own strategy. That means we recruit members who are specialists either in sprint or long distance to join the relay.' The relay required each school to recruit four members - two for the 100 metres, one for the 200 m and one for the 400 m. 'We're satisfied with this result. It's a good opportunity for us to practise our running and keep track of our competitors' performance,' Ka-fai said. He said they trained for two to three hours a day, three times a week. 'After this competition, we will prepare for the Inter-School Cross-Country and Inter-School Age Group Competitions this month and we hope we can achieve brilliant results in them as well,' Ka-fai said. He said some of his teammates would be taking a break from athletics as they were in Form Five and Form Seven. Tang Hon-sing and Wan Kin- yee were named Athletic King and Athletic Queen. The two-day event was held at Wan Chai Sports Ground. It was organised by Hong Kong Amateur Athletic Association, the Provisional Urban and Regional councils and sponsored by Watson's Water.
