Despite the multitude of new faces trying their luck in next month's district council elections, it will mostly be a case of new wine in old bottles.

With little or no track record in the community, many candidates will be relying on their party ticket to see them through to victory.

Political commentator Professor Lau Siu-kai, of the Chinese University, said candidates would be relying heavily on their party's campaign strategies for the November 28 poll.

The Democratic Party is fielding 172 candidates, while its arch-rival, the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong, has put up 176 contenders.

There are 390 seats up for grabs, plus 27 for ex-officio members such as rural leaders and 102 for appointed members.

Professor Lau said it was unnecessary to have too many creative ideas as there were only a few thousand voters in each constituency.

He believed that the Democratic Party had tried to highlight its banner, political ideals and distrust in the Government since the DAB had greater resources.
