Visa International will establish a research and development facility in the SAR in collaboration with the University of Hong Kong to explore smart-card applications.

The centre will focus on smart-card applications for academic services and activities offered by universities in the Asia Pacific region.

Senior vice-president and general manager for Greater China and the Philippines Richard Chang said Visa would later help its member banks to develop specific smart-card projects with the centre.

Visa believed the university would provide a suitable environment for innovation and development of smart-card applications.

'People of my age may not know what Java [a language for smart-card applications] is about. But in the university it is part of the daily lives of the students.' He said the smart-card centre was in line with Visa's vision of developing an open platform for smart-card applications.

'We don't want to own a platform. But we will make inroads to let the platform develop into a benchmark which can be followed by others.
