INTERNATIONAL news network CNN is to highlight the plight of SAR people detained on the mainland in a programme to be aired next week. Hong Kong-based anchor Karuna Shinso will interview the wife of Peter Leung Wing-sum, who has been held for more than eight months without trial in Jiyuan, Henan province. Human rights activist Ho Hei-wah of the Society for Community Organisation will also appear on the programme to discuss the wider repercussions of the cases. Mr Leung's wife, Connie Leung Tam Sau-wah, is expected to make an appeal to the mainland authorities for her husband's release. His ordeal began on April 3 when he was abducted by a state-run ceramics factory over a $2 million unpaid bill left by his former boss. The mainland authorities are now demanding $1.5 million to $2 million for his release. 'I want to draw more attention to my husband's case - that he has been made a scapegoat,' Mrs Leung said. The Inland Revenue Department has even sent her husband a demand for interest on an outstanding tax bill. 'I hope the SAR Government can be pushed to deal with the issue positively and proactively,' she said.
