More than 18,000 non-Beijing residents have been thrown out of the capital in a campaign to prevent the environment from reverting to pre-National Day conditions.

The non-residents were rounded up and sent back to their home towns last week, the Beijing Daily reported.

The week-long campaign, which ended on Sunday, targeted beggars and illegal vendors who reappeared after the October 1 celebrations.

'To let Beijing preserve its clean, orderly and exquisite environment is the goal of our long-term struggle,' said Mayor Liu Qi.

Street vendors who returned after the holiday were again forced to either stop selling or take their business indoors. Last week, officials stopped more than 20,000 hawkers, such as those running food stalls, from operating. A total of 710,000 yuan (HK$813,660) was collected in fines.

Before National Day, the capital conducted a month-long campaign to rid the city of 'eyesores', namely street beggars and non-resident labourers searching for work, hawkers and illegal buildings.
