The Disney project would boost prosperity through sustainable development, planning officials said yesterday.
The multibillion-dollar project met social, economic and environmental requirements, Director of Planning Bosco Fung Chee-keung said.
He said the Disney theme park could not escape the same planning requirements as other big projects.
'We shall make sure it is benefiting the economy and the community and not damaging the environment,' Mr Fung said. 'If a decision has been made, then obviously all the processes have been gone through and the Government has listened to many sides.' Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa stressed the Government's commitment to sustainable development in his Policy Address delivered last month.
A Council for Sustainable Development will be set up to advise the Government and manage a $100 million grant to support community initiatives in this area.
The Government defines sustainable development as a 'vibrant economy, social progress and better environmental quality'.
