Disney is not a competitor and will bring in extra tourists, Ocean Park said. 'We see the roles of Ocean Park and the Hong Kong Disneyland as complementary to each other, as evident in other locations where a Disney theme park co-exists with different attractions,' an Ocean Park spokesman said. 'We see [Disney] as an opportunity as more visitors will come to Hong Kong as a result.' Ocean Park visitors dropped to three million and 3.1 million for the financial years 1997/98 and 1998/99, from a peak of 4.1 million in 1996/97. The marine park's board member and Travel Industry Council chairman Simon Hau Sau-kei said the Government had earmarked a $500 million low-interest loan to rebuild a 30,000-square-metre park area for marine mammal shows and a seaport village for dining.
