Hong Kong's first gold came like a bolt from the blue on the opening day of the World Wushu Championships at the Hong Kong Coliseum yesterday.

 Teenager To Yu-hong struck gold in the men's changquan in only his second major international event.

 Hong Kong's first medal, however, came from former world champion Li Fai. She captured a silver in taijiquan, making her international debut in the discipline.

 The SAR bagged two more silvers in the afternoon session through Cheung Man-keung in the men's taijiquan and Tsang Sze-man in the women's nan-cudgel.

 To, 18, registered 9.38 points, 0.03 more than South Korea's Park Chan-dae and 0.05 better than Japan's Sakuma Ryouji.

 The home-bred wushu exponent said he did not expect to win gold.

 'I only set a target of finishing in the top six.

 'My first major competition was the East Asian Games two years ago, but I finished a disappointing ninth then,' To said.

 To's success was partly because China did not enter the event, but he shrugged off that advantage.

 'I would have been more confident if there was a mainland athlete in my event because I like the competition to be stronger,' he said.

 'I performed better than I usually do, especially in my speed and jumps,' said To, who took up the sport when he was six.

 National coach Yu Liguong said To had improved a lot since he started training full-time a year ago.

 Li, who captured world titles in cudgel and changquan in Kuala Lumpur in 1993, said she was satisfied with her silver-winning effort, which saw her score 9.40 points, 0.18 behind China's Qu Hiufong.
