Soccer betting mooted

Martin Wong

The Government would decide whether the Jockey Club should accept bets on soccer matches, its chief executive said yesterday.

Lawrence Wong Chi-kong's remarks follow club chairman Alan Li Fook-sum's earlier comments that the club would consider operating a football gambling business.

'Soccer gambling is always a controversial topic,' said Mr Wong. 'However, the principle of the Jockey Club is always to serve Hong Kong.

'The decision is in the hands of the Government and should go through public discussion.' Facing serious competition from Internet betting, especially on soccer matches, the club has seen revenues drop.
