Flats call for stadium

Hong Kong Stadium should be pulled down and replaced with blocks of flats, non-affiliated legislator Ambrose Cheung Wing-sum said.

Mr Cheung, who is head of the stadium's board of governors, said he was making the suggestion in view of the stadium's poor performance.

Another sports complex should be built elsewhere.

'Experience of the management in the past five years shows the stadium is not viable and it fails to hold diversified activities. Will the Government consider changing the purpose of the stadium [site]?' he asked.

Secretary for Planning, Environment and Lands Gordon Siu Kwing-chue said the idea was novel but would be considered.

The stadium has been hit by several controversies since opening in 1994.

Noise complaints have prevented international stars playing there and the lack of a running track of international standard has also been seen as a major shortcoming.

Mr Cheung said the $6 billion revenue from a redevelopment could be spent on developing sports facilities in southeast Kowloon.
