The appearance of eight SAR-listed companies in a list of the world's best small enterprises could help reinforce Hong Kong's status as a world-class city, according to industry-support groups.

The eight were included in this month's Forbes magazine which compiled a list of the world's 300 best small companies.

'These companies represent a wide spectrum of Hong Kong's manufacturing and service sectors,' said Thomas Tang, executive director of the Hong Kong Productivity Council.

'Clearly the recognition . . . is indicative of the world- class performance of Hong Kong companies.' The companies include fast-food chain Cafe de Coral Holdings, retailers Giordano International and Glorious Sun Enterprises, manufacturer Guangdong Kelon Electrical Holdings, Hung Hing Printing, finance company JCG Holdings, and electronic-component makers Johnson Electric Holdings and Varitronix International.

Hong Kong ranked second for the Asia-Pacific region after Japan, which had 13 companies on the list.
