Knowledge was as important as practical skills, according to the winners of a vehicle trade competition for apprentices.
The annual contest, organised by the Automobile Training Board of the Vocational Training Council (VTC), aims to raise awareness of the importance of training among employers and young people. It is divided into vehicle electrician and vehicle mechanic trades.
This year, the competition attracted 91 contestants from 16 vehicle companies who were final year registered vehicle electrician and vehicle mechanic apprentices.
After studying under the Institute of Vocational Education for one year, the apprentices are assigned to different companies. They study one day a week in their second and third terms and work full-time in their fourth and final year.
The competition tested their practical skills and theoretical knowledge of car electrics and mechanics.
In the vehicle electrician trade category, all three winners were from Kowloon Motor Bus. Champion Leung Kai-wa also scored the highest marks in the theory test and skills exams. The first and second runners-up were Chan Chi-wai and Yiu Ka- leung, respectively.
