Jackie Chan, you're in good company. When we thought some of history's most famous men were concentrating on their duties as world leaders, they too had time for 'playful acts' with women other than their wives.

The White House has been central to the dramas of American history. But All The Presidents' Women (World, 10pm) reveals its other life, with presidents dallying in closets or swimming pools with slave girls, Hollywood stars, prostitutes and secretaries.

It would be easy to dismiss this Investigative Reports documentary as mere titillation. But its producers also go for an in-depth approach in their interviews with biographers, historians and relatives, convincing us that this material is not just an entertaining eye-opener but is of historical interest.

These presidents can only be fully understood and assessed if we know the limits to their integrity and the depth of their hypocrisy, qualities put most to the test in their sex lives. The White House is also seen in a different light when we realise that its inhabitants had time for carnal entertainment, often in a style that would be morally unacceptable to many voters. John F Kennedy, for example, crashes off his pedestal when we hear of his demands for prostitutes and of his nude swimming parties with Hollywood stars - he complained that he suffered from headaches if he didn't have a woman every couple of days.

His historical image also loses its sexual allure when we hear of Marilyn Monroe's complaints of what an unsatisfying lover he was. Thomas Jefferson, Franklin D Roosevelt, Warren Harding, Grover Cleveland, Dwight D Eisenhower and Lyndon B Johnson are others who led scandalous secret lives.

Jefferson, for instance, began his affair with Sally Hemmings when the slave was just 14 years old and went on to father her seven illegitimate children.
