Hundreds of sculptors and spectators showed up at the Hong Kong Sand Sculpture Competition-cum- Beach Carnival at Shek O Main Beach. The contest was open to teams of two to six members. With the theme 'Towards the Millennium Year', it was divided into six categories: families, secondary schools, primary schools, industrial/commercial organisations, open and improvisation. The contest attracted 120 teams this year. The four winners in each category were awarded trophies and the entry with the highest score won the Sand Sculpture Grand Prize. The event also featured games and drama performances.
