A JURY yesterday returned a verdict of death by natural causes on a 35-year-old woman who died as a result of a particular complication of childbirth that is almost unknown among Chinese women.
The inquest was told that housewife Mrs Ho Yung-oi died soon after giving birth. The cause of death was a condition that caused a blood clot to cut off the blood supply to her brain.
Cerebral venous thrombosis was particularly alarming because a patient could appear healthy one day and be dead the next, the court was told.
Returning its verdict, the jury added that hospital authorities should take steps to ensure doctors in Hongkong were aware of the condition and its incidence among women who are pregnant, have been pregnant or are taking oestrogen.
Mrs Ho was discharged from hospital after giving birth on July 29 last year. On August 12 she complained of a headache and vomiting and was taken to Kwong Wah Hospital, where she was examined and sent home.
However, by morning she had fallen into a coma and was returned to hospital, where she was found to be suffering hydrocephalus, or water on the brain.
