$16.8m writ filed over Garley fire

A WRIT claiming at least $16.85 million has been filed against firms the plaintiffs blame for sparking the 1996 Garley Building fire, which killed 40 and injured 80.

Included in the claim is more than $1.3 million in legal costs incurred by plaintiff China Fair for an inquiry conducted by Mr Justice Woo Kwok-hing.

Lawyers for China Fair and joint plaintiff Dr Clement Leung, trading as Clement K. M. Leung MD Inc, filed the writ in the High Court on Friday.

China Fair, which leases its properties on the upper floors of the Nathan Road building, is suing for $15,047,278 in losses, damages and costs. It is also claiming for various sums which are to be quantified.

Dr Leung, who had a clinic on the 11th floor, is suing for $1,808,778 to cover costs of moving to Mongkok.

Named as defendants are Ryoden Lift and Escalator, Hop Cheong Engineering and Fong Fun-peng trading as Kwan Kee Construction.
