What is your present schedule and what are your plans for next year? I was exhausted after more than 200 fans turned out for my first autograph-signing session on November 7. Now, I am busy shooting a comedy, The Great Winner , which will be released during Chinese New Year. I am also doing a voice-over for the main character in an animated movie, Lotus Lantern , which is based on a Chinese legend. I was recently appointed as the IT ambassador of the HSBC Hong Kong Schools IT Festival to help promote information technology among local youngsters. Next year, I will focus mainly on my singing and try a little bit of composing to prove that I can be an all-round musician. How and when did you start your showbiz career? I auditioned after winning the gold award in the Big Echo Karaoke Singing Contest in 1995. Then I signed a contract with Fitto Entertainment last year. What was your childhood ambition? I wanted to be a a singer. I remember I often sang in front of my family when I was a child. My home was the stage, and my family were the audience. What are your hobbies? Can you play any mu sical instru ments? My hobbies are playing volleyball and computer games, singing, dancing, swimming, and solving jigsaw puzzles. I can also play the guitar. Apart from singing, do you like acting in movies? I like acting because it helps develop my singing career while gaining valuable experience. In my school days, I often staged dramas with classmates. How would you describe your life as a newcomer to the local music scene? I was very nervous before the media at first, but I have gradually adapted to the publicity that comes with the job. A few times when I was walking alone, passers-by recognised me and they all were very friendly. Do you have any 'best friends' in the industry? Do you have a role model? Nicholas Tse and Lillian Ho are my best showbiz friends be cause we are with the same record company. Hikaru Utada, the gifted 16- year-old Japanese singer-songwriter, is my role model because I admire her talents and she has achieved a lot for her age. Are you confident about win ning newcomer awards at vari ous broadcasters' ceremonies next year? Yes, I am confident but I don't want to set my expectations too high because I understand that the more confidence I have, the more I will be disappointed if I fail. Having confidence doesn't mean one must win, but if one does not have confidence, one cannot succeed. You recently promoted a skincare product on TV. Why did the advertis ing agency select you as the model? I guess the agency found that my skin was per fect for the prod uct, which is new in the market, and I am a newcomer to the local enter tainment scene. What do you do to relax? I prefer to stay at home and watch TV, surf the Net and sleep. I don't like to go outside as Hong Kong's air quality is deteriorating. Who is your music teacher and how much time do you spend on music lessons? I set aside one or two days a week for music lessons. Roman Tam is my teacher and he was recommended by my record company. I admire his music knowledge and work ethic. Critics say the Hong Kong music industry only produces idols and pretty faces. What do you think? How do you see yourself in the industry? There is no denying that a pretty face and excellent 'packaging' play a vital role in promotions. However, I think talent is the key to success in any field. I don't blindly follow others; I work hard and try to enrich myself with as much knowledge as possible. I also want to be sincere to everyone. Describe your ideal lover? First, he must love me and my family. He should also have a sense of humour. In fact, I hope my boyfriend could help me to improve my interpersonal relationships and life in general. What is your ambition? As with almost every singer, my dream is to stage a concert. I also hope to act in more movies. I got seven or eight movie offers, but my record company rejected all of them due to my tight schedule. My agent told me to make singing my priority. Although I was not happy, I accepted the arrangement. What was the most unforget table event in your life? Becoming a singer and releasing my first EP album are the biggest events in my life so far. Do you have a success for mula? I like to tell youths to be brave and confident about what they do. Being a singer, I have devoted my whole life to the pursuit of music, and I must seize every opportunity to try different things to fulfil my ambitions. I am not afraid of failure because it will help me learn many valuable lessons. I know that every time I overcome a difficulty, I am a step closer to achieving my ambition. If there was a next life, would you still want to be a singer? Yes, I would because I really like singing and I feel very much at home on stage. What will you do on New Year's Eve? At present, I know I will be singing in some millennium-countdown concerts, but the schedule is posing problems. After finishing work on New Year's Eve, I plan to invite the crew for a barbecue at my house. When would you get mar ried? Would you retire from showbiz after marriage? Marriage is a long way off, but I would like to tie the knot at 30. Whether I would leave the showbiz scene after marriage would depend on what my husband wanted. Basically, I want to be a good wife and mother as I love babies. What is your message to Hong Kong's youths? Nowadays, youths can't cope with failure or difficulties, and they are easily influenced by movies and TV programmes. They think suicide can solve their problems. Youths must cherish their lives and consult their parents or friends when faced with adversity. Life is all about being positive and optimistic in tackling daily challenges.
