It's not only on the fairways where standards are rising in golf in Asia. Off the course, too, golfing establishments around the region are rapidly making up ground on their counterparts in Europe and the United States.

A degree of credit for that goes to Dr Tim Somerville, president and founder of the internationally acclaimed California-based Professional Golfers Career College (PGCC).

Into his third decade as a leader in the golf education business, the good doctor has been responsible for training more than 1,500 men and women in all aspects of the industry.

At least 50 Asian disciples of Dr Somerville - general managers, club pros and teaching pros - are plying their trade in the Far East.

Not only are they putting into practice the experiences they gained at college in Temecula, but also they're passing on their expertise to home-bred staff.

Among those who have graduated from the PGCC are David and Debbie Lloyd who run a thriving golf improvement centre in Causeway Bay, Cantonese golf television commentator Alvin Chung, and A. S. Khamis, the president and driving force behind The Golf Club Managers Association of Malaysia.
