Guest speaker Law Lai-huen, former editor of Breakthrough magazine, inspired students at a morning assembly at Hong Kong True Light College. Miss Law was invited to encourage students and staff to strive for this year's school goals: 'learn to love to learn'; 'care and share - show you'll be there'; 'click on the icon for knowledge' and 'make your future in the millennium'. Miss Law urged students to keep an open attitude to learning in the modern world and to observe and learn from those around them and to appreciate their merits. She advised students to read more books. 'Reading a touching article each day lets me know that life is full of hope and I won't be so pessimistic when I am in trouble,' she said. Miss Law said human beings always have prejudices about others and themselves. 'People think they cannot do something and therefore always fail. We should see that different people have different abilities,' Ms Law said. 'We should not restrict ourselves to certain views.' Miss Law said students should show care and concern for others in a compassionate way. She recommended students volunteered to help people in need when they had time. She also urged students not to lose sight of their dreams. 'I wanted to be a writer when I was young but my parents did not support me. Although I followed their instructions and studied mathematics, I didn't give up my dream. I volunteered to be a reporter for a magazine. I rewrote my first article seven times! The editor was very satisfied with me and this was the start of my career. 'Or course, it is very hard to achieve what you want, but never give up!' Miss Law said students should master new technologies. She said the Internet had given her more contact with people overseas and a more international outlook. The assembly finished in a cheerful atmosphere and everyone was encouraged to work harder to achieve school targets. Esther is a student at Hong Kong True Light College
