A longstanding duel for a North District constituency has taken a new twist with one of the rivals switching to another seat and leaving the battle to his wife. Democrat Wong Ching-han, 36, will now take on So Sai-chi of the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong in Choi Yuen. Mr So defeated Mrs Wong's husband Wong Sing-chi in 1994, gaining revenge for a defeat at Mr Wong's hands in 1991. Mr Wong has switched to fight Tin Ping East, taking on non-affiliated candidates Yong Sheung-ying and Yung Ip Siu-mui. Mr Wong said: 'I didn't avoid running in Choi Yuen because I'm afraid of losing. My office moved to Tin Ping East. That's why I chose the constituency. 'I won't let my wife become cannon fodder. We emphasise our relationship to voters. We try to tell them if my wife wins, I will also serve the area.' The couple have been married for 11 years and have a seven-year-old son. A family picture was carried in Mrs Wong's election leaflet. Mrs Wong, who lost in the 1988 and 1991 district polls in North District, expects to get votes from her husband's supporters. She did not run in 1994. 'When I tell residents I'm the wife of Wong Sing-chi, they say they will vote for me,' she said. Mr So claimed Mr Wong moved to a constituency where he had a better chance in order to avoid a second defeat. He said playing the family card smacked of a last resort. 'I believe voters should look at what I have done in the past few years,' he said. Mr Wong, who was in the headlines last week after he was held by police during a confrontation with a group of Shek Wu San Tsuen residents over the diversion of a river, said he was not worried that his image would be harmed by the incident. He has not been charged but was asked to report to police next Tuesday. 'I believe the voters understand I was only a mediator in the incident,' he said. Mr Wong is among eight Democrats bidding for seats in the district. Of them, seven are taking on the DAB, which has fielded 13 candidates. The Heung Yee Kuk, Liberal Party and 123 Democratic Alliance have only one candidate each in the district.
