Chinese head coach Li Yongbo is against former player Wang Chen representing Hong Kong.

Li, who led his team at last week's Hong Kong Open, said Wang's switch of allegiance took him by surprise as he only realised it when he came to the SAR.

Wang, 23, who took the world junior title for China in 1994, withdrew from the Chinese national squad last year and joined the Hong Kong team in July.

'I don't want her to play for another country because we put so many resources and so much time into developing her in the past,' said Li.

But Li said it was Wang's abrupt departure from China and the lack of communication between the China and Hong Kong associations that mattered most.

'She left China in an improper way. She was sent back to the Shanghai provincial team last year but she didn't even notify the Shanghai sports officials when she left [for Hong Kong].' Li added that he did not care about the threat Wang would pose to China.
