More than 100 islanders surrounded Peng Chau's police station last night demanding the release of five suspects arrested hours earlier. The confrontation began shortly after 9pm when Marine Police detectives arrested three 17-year-old youths over a recent malicious damage case and took them to the station for questioning. Shortly afterwards, two men, aged 26 and 28, appeared outside, shouted abuse at the officers and demanded they be released. The pair were arrested on charges of obstructing police. A group of about 100 islanders then appeared at the station, demanding the five be released. Reinforcements were called in from Cheung Chau and at 1.15am, police reported the situation had been contained, although a group was still outside the station. Extra Marine Police launches were positioned off the island.
